**Job Summary**

NREL's Buildings and Thermal Systems Center has an immediate opening for a full-time Software Engineer in the Residential Buildings Research Group. The ideal candidate will bring a creative, get-it-done ?maker? mentality into a diverse team working on challenging cutting-edge laboratory and analytical projects to research, develop, evaluate and integrate Internet of Things (IoT) based energy management algorithms, devices, and systems that deliver cost-effective energy savings and power system benefits for residential buildings and neighborhoods. This entry-level position is regular, full-time and is based in Golden, CO.

Under the general direction of senior staff, the successful candidate will:

+ develop software and microelectronics which enable research on IoT systems, including user interfaces, data analytics and visualizations;

+ perform laboratory and analytical evaluations of building systems;

+ collaborate on multi-disciplinary teams with NREL colleagues in building systems, cybersecurity, energy blockchain, vehicle technologies, fuel cells, power systems, strategic analysis, and scientific computing;

+ support senior researchers in developing and implementing machine learning, transactive markets, optimization and cyber-physical control of complex systems;

+ support innovation in energy analysis, cost savings, and infrastructure impacts for advanced building systems.

Laboratory work will be conducted in several NREL laboratories including the Systems Performance Laboratory (SPL) at the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) on NREL's main campus. SPL features three complete smart home test beds that enable simulated occupancy, smart metering, demand-response enabled appliances, circuit-level monitoring, battery storage, on-site renewables, EV-charging, HVAC environmental chambers, community-scale interactions and a flexible power grid infrastructure.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills

+ Strong interpersonal communication skills (oral and written).

+ Demonstrated ability to work independently under direction of senior research staff.

+ Demonstrated excellence programming in multiple languages which must include Python, command-line, and Linux.


**Required Education, Experience, and Skills**

Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
