SummaryEnsures longevity of Enterprise Database Systems through backup and recovery, high availability, tuning, and development.Implements and maintains the DB environment. Primary function is to monitor and maintain a production Oracle database environments, including run-time optimization, capacity management and planning, security, configuration, scheduling, and execution of maintenance utilities. Maintains user tables and permissions. The DBA/DBE is also responsible for database recovery and restart as well as data and referential integrity of the database.Responsible for training other DBA/DBE's in emerging technologies, and to act as support to architectural decisionmaking.The Senior Database Engineer must be capable of translating Business needs into technical actions. The Engineer must be able to work closely with Developers, Architects, and Business Individuals to ensure that the best business and technical practices (for the circumstance) are being employed. The Senior Database Engineer will encounter difficult decisions regarding best practices that will require analytic thinking to determinewhen deviations from standards may be necessary, and able to develop plans to correct deviations and technical debt in the future.Job ResponsibilitiesPhysical database design and tuningBulk loading of source data and source data conditioningDatabase security and diagnostic maintenanceLogical-to-physical data model engineering, including Advanced Dataguard, GoldenGate, etcConfiguration management of application software to database structureCapacity planning of database and needs assessmentDistributed database management and controlDatabase user security and permissionsEvaluation and utilization of software products to assist in the management of dataPlanning, installation, and maintenance of DBMS softwarePrimary interface to DBMS vendorDiagnosis of problems and resolution for application softwareMeasurement of DBMS performance and tuning; diagnosis of problemsModification of system-level configuration to optimize performanceInterface with SQL developers for performance and data access requirementsDevelopment of standards and procedures for the DBMS environmentConsultation with system administrator regarding O/S - DBMS requirementsMaintenance of physical integrity of all production databasesRegularly scheduled verification procedures and error correctionMonitoring errors and work with Oracle SupportTrain other team members in emerging technologiesAct as advisors to Architect teamsUnderstand strengths and weaknesses of systems alternative to Oracle, OLTP, RDBMS, etcBe able to make recommendations on these technologiesAid in application design and tuning with regard to the databaseAssist in guidingthe technical directon of the database teamMake difficult/mission-critical "last-call" decisionsUnderstand programing languages with enough proficiency to aid developers in translating code to PL/SQLAdapt to changes in job requirements, learning and applying new skills as needed to ensure the company's successFulfill all other requests/needs determined by managementPerform other duties as required and assigned by manager and upper management.Follow legal policies as directed.Job RequirementsExcellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skillsAbility to perform comfortably in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented work environmentProvide 24/7 support for Technical OperationsMinimum of 5+ years experience in Relational Database Administration in a production environmentHighlyProficient in SQL and PL/SQLAdvanced knowledge SQL and PL/SQL optimization techniquesHighly proficient in instance level tuningWell versed instorage managementand storage tuningExpertise in Information Lifecycle ManagementKnowledge of dimensional modeling, star schema, analytics, and other warehousing skillsExpert with backup and recovery solutions including planning, implementing and periodic evaluation of backup/recovery (offline/online) strategies, RMAN, recovery catalog and fast recovery strategiesUnderstanding of capacity planning and traffic modelingExcellent scripting in both bash & perlStrong problem solving and analytical skillsExperience working in a team environmentSkillsOracleSQLPerlGood Automation skillsEducationBachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience requiredCertificationsCertifications in Oracle database technology are desiredWho We Are:Just a few minutes from Salt Lake City and Utah's ski slopes, Overstock is an original resident of "Silicon Slopes", one of the fastest growing technology hubs in the country.
