The Assistant Vice President for Emerging Technology (AVP) is a leadership position created to spearhead, champion, and direct the creation of the newly formed Emerging Technology team in the Department of Information Technology. The Emerging Technology team is a fast-paced, startup inspired group that will be developing extremely innovative solutions to some of the most challenging problems at The New School, in higher education, and industry through highly engaged partnerships with external organizations. The AVP for Emerging Technology must have the deep technical skills needed to understand how to best leverage the world of cloud, machine learning, blockchain, and related technologies, while also being a leader with strong executive skills, who can inspire, empower and care for the organization, develop a talent strategy to recruit and motivate top minds, and work with key teams and individuals across the university, including the most senior leadership. The AVP for Emerging Technology reports to the Chief Information Officer (CIO). Major Responsibilities Build the Emerging Technology organization using both a strong technical depth of knowledge in emerging technology fields and exceptional management skills. Ensure the team continually evolves its innovation-first approach, by consistently driving learning, leveraging of, and working with the latest technology in cloud, ML, blockchain, IoT, and other advanced and emerging technical fields. Taking the approach of letting the outcome define the technology , develop IT innovation strategy and solutions through partnership with leaders across Academic, Enrollment, Operations, Human Resource, Legal, Finance, Marketing, Alumni Relation, Social Justice, Board of Trustees, Senates, and other IT functional areas. Collaborate across the university with students, faculty, and staff to identify innovation opportunities. Evangelize the strategy and roadmap to stakeholders in the New School Community and to partners outside the university. End-to-end ownership of solution development set direction and support the Emerging Technology team to execute from conceptualization to general availability. Team up with Foundation Technology organization to deploy and support campus IT solutions. Develop systems, procedures, processes, and metrics to monitor and measure outcomes. Manage vendors and suppliers end-to-end, from RFP to contract closure. Manage budget through income and spending cycles. Create strong external eminence through publications, keynote speeches, exhibitions, etc. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor s degree in information technology, science or engineering related field. Deep technical knowledge and experience in emerging technology fields. Strong knowledge of modern cloud technologies, such as Docker, OpenShift, and similar containerization platforms, orchestration systems such as Kubernetes, scalable and resilient clustering such as Apache Spark, serverless computing architectures such as AWS Lambda, automation tools such as Jenkins, etc. Knowledge of major blockchain platforms, including Ethereum and Hyperledger. Knowledge of major AI-based frameworks such as scikit-learn, Keras, PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc. Executive presence, ability to interact with senior leaders and adapt style as needed for technical or non-technical audiences. Demonstrated ability to provide clear, consistent leadership, management and mentoring. 5 years of experience in managing people. 3 years of experience in the past 5 years in managing advanced and emerging information technology research development (RD). Demonstrated successful management of a technology budget in a large, complex organization. Defined, led, and launched SaaS solution using AI or Blockchain. Managed SaaS development using continuous integration and continuous delivery (CICD) familiar with the CICD toolsenvironments. Familiarity with education industry standards, e.g. IMS Global, CEDS standard. Hands on programming experience using Python, Java, Node.js, CC++, JavaScript, or PHP. Knowledge of applicable development frameworks (such as Jupyter). Preferred Qualifications Master s degree in information technology, science or engineering related field. 10 years of experience in managing people. 3 years of experience in the past 5 years in managing information. technology research development (RD). 10 years of budgetary ownership. Worked as a SaaS architect. Worked as a Cloud security technologist. Hands on experience in Master Data Management (MDM). Led privacy compliance initiatives such as GDPR. Familiar with higher education applications and data. Familiar with Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, or related technology Business development experience.
